St. Lawrence was a deacon during the papacy of Pope St. Sixtus. He was in charge of giving help to the poor and the needy. When a persecution broke out, Pope St. Sixtus was condemned to death. As he was being led to his death, St. Lawrence full of sorrow, asked him “Father, where are you going without your deacon?” Pope St. Sixtus answered “in three days you will follow me.”

St. Lawrence sold expensive vessels and gave all the money he had to the poor. The Prefect of Rome thought the Church had lot of treasure hidden and he asked St. Lawrence to bring him all the Church’s treasures.St. Lawrence went throughout the city and gathered all the sick and poor people and brought them to the Prefect and told him “This is the Church’s treasure!”

The Prefect was enraged and condemned St. Lawrence to a cruel and slow painful death. He ordered St. Lawrence to be tied to an iron grill and be roasted slowly to death.

St Lawrence was filled with so much love of God, that God game him the strength to endure the flames. He even joked and said to the Judge “Turn me over, I’m done on this side!”

And just before his death, he said, “It’s cooked enough now.”

He then prayed for the city of Rome and that the Catholic faith my spread through out the world.

Prayer to St Lawrence –

O glorious Saint Lawrence, Martyr and Deacon, who, being subjected to the most bitter torments, didst not lose thy faith nor thy constancy in confessing Jesus Christ, obtain in like manner for us such an active and solid faith, that we shall never be ashamed to be true followers of Jesus Christ, and fervent Christians in word and in deed.

V. Pray for us, O holy Lawrence,

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

Grant, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, the grace to quench the flames of our vices, Thou who didst enable blessed Lawrence to overcome his fiery torments. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
