First Reading – 1 MC 2<\/span><\/h4>\n

The officers of the king in charge of enforcing the apostasy
\ncame to the city of Modein to organize the sacrifices.
\nMany of Israel joined them,
\nbut Mattathias and his sons gathered in a group apart.
\nThen the officers of the king addressed Mattathias:
\n“You are a leader, an honorable and great man in this city,
\nsupported by sons and kin.
\nCome now, be the first to obey the king’s command,
\nas all the Gentiles and the men of Judah
\nand those who are left in Jerusalem have done.
\nThen you and your sons shall be numbered among the King’s Friends,
\nand shall be enriched with silver and gold and many gifts.”
\nBut Mattathias answered in a loud voice:
\n“Although all the Gentiles in the king’s realm obey him,
\nso that each forsakes the religion of his fathers
\nand consents to the king’s orders,
\nyet I and my sons and my kin
\nwill keep to the covenant of our fathers.
\nGod forbid that we should forsake the law and the commandments.
\nWe will not obey the words of the king
\nnor depart from our religion in the slightest degree.”<\/p>\n

As he finished saying these words,
\na certain Jew came forward in the sight of all
\nto offer sacrifice on the altar in Modein
\naccording to the king’s order.
\nWhen Mattathias saw him, he was filled with zeal;
\nhis heart was moved and his just fury was aroused;
\nhe sprang forward and killed him upon the altar.
\nAt the same time, he also killed the messenger of the king
\nwho was forcing them to sacrifice,
\nand he tore down the altar.
\nThus he showed his zeal for the law,
\njust as Phinehas did with Zimri, son of Salu.<\/p>\n

Then Mattathias went through the city shouting,
\n“Let everyone who is zealous for the law
\nand who stands by the covenant follow after me!”
\nThereupon he fled to the mountains with his sons,
\nleaving behind in the city all their possessions.
\nMany who sought to live according to righteousness and religious custom
\nwent out into the desert to settle there.<\/p>\n

Gospel – Luke 19<\/span><\/h4>\n

As Jesus drew near Jerusalem,
\nhe saw the city and wept over it, saying,
\n“If this day you only knew what makes for peace\u2013
\nbut now it is hidden from your eyes.
\nFor the days are coming upon you
\nwhen your enemies will raise a palisade against you;
\nthey will encircle you and hem you in on all sides.
\nThey will smash you to the ground and your children within you,
\nand they will not leave one stone upon another within you
\nbecause you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
