First Reading – 1 MC 4<\/span><\/h4>\n

Judas and his brothers said,
\n“Now that our enemies have been crushed,
\nlet us go up to purify the sanctuary and rededicate it.”
\nSo the whole army assembled, and went up to Mount Zion.<\/p>\n

Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month,
\nthat is, the month of Chislev,
\nin the year one hundred and forty-eight,
\nthey arose and offered sacrifice according to the law
\non the new altar of burnt offerings that they had made.
\nOn the anniversary of the day on which the Gentiles had defiled it,
\non that very day it was reconsecrated
\nwith songs, harps, flutes, and cymbals.
\nAll the people prostrated themselves and adored and praised Heaven,
\nwho had given them success.<\/p>\n

For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar
\nand joyfully offered burnt offerings and sacrifices
\nof deliverance and praise.
\nThey ornamented the facade of the temple with gold crowns and shields;
\nthey repaired the gates and the priests’ chambers
\nand furnished them with doors.
\nThere was great joy among the people
\nnow that the disgrace of the Gentiles was removed.
\nThen Judas and his brothers and the entire congregation of Israel
\ndecreed that the days of the dedication of the altar
\nshould be observed with joy and gladness
\non the anniversary every year for eight days,
\nfrom the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev.<\/p>\n

Gospel – Luke 19<\/span><\/h4>\n

Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out
\nthose who were selling things, saying to them,
\n“It is written,\u00a0My house shall be a house of prayer,
\nbut you have made it a den of thieves.<\/em>”
\nAnd every day he was teaching in the temple area.
\nThe chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile,
\nwere seeking to put him to death,
\nbut they could find no way to accomplish their purpose
