First Reading – 1 MC 6<\/span><\/h4>\n

As King Antiochus was traversing the inland provinces,
\nhe heard that in Persia there was a city called Elymais,
\nfamous for its wealth in silver and gold,
\nand that its temple was very rich,
\ncontaining gold helmets, breastplates, and weapons
\nleft there by Alexander, son of Philip,
\nking of Macedon, the first king of the Greeks.
\nHe went therefore and tried to capture and pillage the city.
\nBut he could not do so,
\nbecause his plan became known to the people of the city
\nwho rose up in battle against him.
\nSo he retreated and in great dismay withdrew from there
\nto return to Babylon.<\/p>\n

While he was in Persia, a messenger brought him news
\nthat the armies sent into the land of Judah had been put to flight;
\nthat Lysias had gone at first with a strong army
\nand been driven back by the children of Israel;
\nthat they had grown strong
\nby reason of the arms, men, and abundant possessions
\ntaken from the armies they had destroyed;
\nthat they had pulled down the Abomination
\nwhich he had built upon the altar in Jerusalem;
\nand that they had surrounded with high walls
\nboth the sanctuary, as it had been before,
\nand his city of Beth-zur.<\/p>\n

When the king heard this news,
\nhe was struck with fear and very much shaken.
\nSick with grief because his designs had failed, he took to his bed.
\nThere he remained many days, overwhelmed with sorrow,
\nfor he knew he was going to die.<\/p>\n

So he called in all his Friends and said to them:
\n“Sleep has departed from my eyes,
\nfor my heart is sinking with anxiety.
\nI said to myself: ‘Into what tribulation have I come,
\nand in what floods of sorrow am I now!
\nYet I was kindly and beloved in my rule.’
\nBut I now recall the evils I did in Jerusalem,
\nwhen I carried away all the vessels of gold and silver
\nthat were in it, and for no cause
\ngave orders that the inhabitants of Judah be destroyed.
\nI know that this is why these evils have overtaken me;
\nand now I am dying, in bitter grief, in a foreign land.”<\/p>\n

Gospel – Luke 19<\/span><\/h4>\n

Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection,
\ncame forward and put this question to Jesus, saying,
\n“Teacher, Moses wrote for us,
\nIf someone’s brother dies leaving a wife but no child,
\nhis brother must take the wife
\nand raise up descendants for his brother.
\nNow there were seven brothers;
\nthe first married a woman but died childless.
\nThen the second and the third married her,
\nand likewise all the seven died childless.
\nFinally the woman also died.
\nNow at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be?
\nFor all seven had been married to her.”
\nJesus said to them,
\n“The children of this age marry and remarry;
\nbut those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age
\nand to the resurrection of the dead
\nneither marry nor are given in marriage.
\nThey can no longer die,
\nfor they are like angels;
\nand they are the children of God
\nbecause they are the ones who will rise.
\nThat the dead will rise
\neven Moses made known in the passage about the bush,
\nwhen he called ‘Lord’
\nthe God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;
\nand he is not God of the dead, but of the living,
\nfor to him all are alive.”
\nSome of the scribes said in reply,
\n“Teacher, you have answered well.”
