First Reading –\u00a0Is 40<\/span><\/h4>\n

Comfort, give comfort to my people,
\nsays your God.
\nSpeak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her
\nthat her service is at an end,
\nher guilt is expiated;
\nindeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD
\ndouble for all her sins.<\/p>\n

A voice cries out:
\nIn the desert prepare the way of the LORD!
\nMake straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!
\nEvery valley shall be filled in,
\nevery mountain and hill shall be made low;
\nthe rugged land shall be made a plain,
\nthe rough country, a broad valley.
\nThen the glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
\nand all people shall see it together;
\nfor the mouth of the LORD has spoken.<\/p>\n

Go up on to a high mountain,
\nZion, herald of glad tidings;
\ncry out at the top of your voice,
\nJerusalem, herald of good news!
\nFear not to cry out
\nand say to the cities of Judah:
\nHere is your God!
\nHere comes with power
\nthe Lord GOD,
\nwho rules by his strong arm;
\nhere is his reward with him,
\nhis recompense before him.
\nLike a shepherd he feeds his flock;
\nin his arms he gathers the lambs,
\ncarrying them in his bosom,
\nand leading the ewes with care.<\/p>\n

Second\u00a0Reading –\u00a02 Peter<\/span><\/h4>\n

Do not ignore this one fact, beloved,
\nthat with the Lord one day is like a thousand years
\nand a thousand years like one day.
\nThe Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard “delay,”
\nbut he is patient with you,
\nnot wishing that any should perish
\nbut that all should come to repentance.
\nBut the day of the Lord will come like a thief,
\nand then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar
\nand the elements will be dissolved by fire,
\nand the earth and everything done on it will be found out.<\/p>\n

Since everything is to be dissolved in this way,
\nwhat sort of persons ought you to be,
\nconducting yourselves in holiness and devotion,
\nwaiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God,
\nbecause of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames
\nand the elements melted by fire.
\nBut according to his promise
\nwe await new heavens and a new earth
\nin which righteousness dwells.
\nTherefore, beloved, since you await these things,
\nbe eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.<\/p>\n

Gospel – Mark 1<\/span><\/h4>\n

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.<\/p>\n

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
\nBehold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
\nhe will prepare your way.
\nA voice of one crying out in the desert:
\n“Prepare the way of the Lord,
\nmake straight his paths.”<\/em>
\nJohn the Baptist appeared in the desert
\nproclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
\nPeople of the whole Judean countryside
\nand all the inhabitants of Jerusalem
\nwere going out to him
\nand were being baptized by him in the Jordan River
\nas they acknowledged their sins.
\nJohn was clothed in camel’s hair,
\nwith a leather belt around his waist.
\nHe fed on locusts and wild honey.
\nAnd this is what he proclaimed:
\n“One mightier than I is coming after me.
\nI am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.
\nI have baptized you with water;
