First Reading –\u00a0Is 40<\/span><\/h4>\n

I am the LORD, your God,
\nwho grasp your right hand;
\nIt is I who say to you, “Fear not,
\nI will help you.”
\nFear not, O worm Jacob,
\nO maggot Israel;
\nI will help you, says the LORD;
\nyour redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
\nI will make of you a threshing sledge,
\nsharp, new, and double-edged,
\nTo thresh the mountains and crush them,
\nto make the hills like chaff.
\nWhen you winnow them, the wind shall carry them off
\nand the storm shall scatter them.
\nBut you shall rejoice in the LORD,
\nand glory in the Holy One of Israel.<\/p>\n

The afflicted and the needy seek water in vain,
\ntheir tongues are parched with thirst.
\nI, the LORD, will answer them;
\nI, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
\nI will open up rivers on the bare heights,
\nand fountains in the broad valleys;
\nI will turn the desert into a marshland,
\nand the dry ground into springs of water.
\nI will plant in the desert the cedar,
\nacacia, myrtle, and olive;
\nI will set in the wasteland the cypress,
\ntogether with the plane tree and the pine,
\nThat all may see and know,
\nobserve and understand,
\nThat the hand of the LORD has done this,
\nthe Holy One of Israel has created it.<\/p>\n

Gospel – Matt 11<\/span><\/h4>\n

Jesus said to the crowds:
\n“Amen, I say to you,
\namong those born of women
\nthere has been none greater than John the Baptist;
\nyet the least in the Kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
\nFrom the days of John the Baptist until now,
\nthe Kingdom of heaven suffers violence,
\nand the violent are taking it by force.
\nAll the prophets and the law prophesied up to the time of John.
\nAnd if you are willing to accept it,
\nhe is Elijah, the one who is to come.
