First Reading –\u00a0Sir 48<\/span><\/h4>\n

In those days,
\nlike a fire there appeared the prophet Elijah
\nwhose words were as a flaming furnace.
\nTheir staff of bread he shattered,
\nin his zeal he reduced them to straits;
\nBy the Lord’s word he shut up the heavens
\nand three times brought down fire.
\nHow awesome are you, Elijah, in your wondrous deeds!
\nWhose glory is equal to yours?
\nYou were taken aloft in a whirlwind of fire,
\nin a chariot with fiery horses.
\nYou were destined, it is written, in time to come
\nto put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD,
\nTo turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons,
\nand to re-establish the tribes of Jacob.
\nBlessed is he who shall have seen you
\nand who falls asleep in your friendship.<\/p>\n

Gospel – Matt 17<\/span><\/h4>\n

As they were coming down from the mountain,
\nthe disciples asked Jesus,
\n“Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
\nHe said in reply, “Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;
\nbut I tell you that Elijah has already come,
\nand they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased.
\nSo also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.”
\nThen the disciples understood
