First Reading –\u00a0Mal 3<\/span><\/h4>\n

Thus says the Lord GOD:
\nLo, I am sending my messenger
\nto prepare the way before me;
\nAnd suddenly there will come to the temple
\nthe LORD whom you seek,
\nAnd the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.
\nYes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
\nBut who will endure the day of his coming?
\nAnd who can stand when he appears?
\nFor he is like the refiner’s fire,
\nor like the fuller’s lye.
\nHe will sit refining and purifying silver,
\nand he will purify the sons of Levi,
\nRefining them like gold or like silver
\nthat they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD.
\nThen the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem
\nwill please the LORD,
\nas in the days of old, as in years gone by.<\/p>\n

Lo, I will send you
\nElijah, the prophet,
\nBefore the day of the LORD comes,
\nthe great and terrible day,
\nTo turn the hearts of the fathers to their children,
\nand the hearts of the children to their fathers,
\nLest I come and strike
\nthe land with doom.<\/p>\n

Gospel – Luke 1<\/span><\/h4>\n

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child
\nshe gave birth to a son.
\nHer neighbors and relatives heard
\nthat the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her,
\nand they rejoiced with her.
\nWhen they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child,
\nthey were going to call him Zechariah after his father,
\nbut his mother said in reply,
\n“No. He will be called John.”
\nBut they answered her,
\n“There is no one among your relatives who has this name.”
\nSo they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.
\nHe asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,”
\nand all were amazed.
\nImmediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
\nand he spoke blessing God.
\nThen fear came upon all their neighbors,
\nand all these matters were discussed
\nthroughout the hill country of Judea.
\nAll who heard these things took them to heart, saying,
\n“What, then, will this child be?
