First Reading –\u00a0Acts 6<\/span><\/h4>\n

Stephen, filled with grace and power,
\nwas working great wonders and signs among the people.
\nCertain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen,
\nCyrenians, and Alexandrians,
\nand people from Cilicia and Asia,
\ncame forward and debated with Stephen,
\nbut they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.<\/p>\n

When they heard this, they were infuriated,
\nand they ground their teeth at him.
\nBut he, filled with the Holy Spirit,
\nlooked up intently to heaven
\nand saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
\nand he said,
\n“Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man
\nstanding at the right hand of God.”
\nBut they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears,
\nand rushed upon him together.
\nThey threw him out of the city, and began to stone him.
\nThe witnesses laid down their cloaks
\nat the feet of a young man named Saul.
\nAs they were stoning Stephen, he called out
\n“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Matt 10<\/span><\/h4>\n

Jesus said to his disciples:
\n“Beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts
\nand scourge you in their synagogues,
\nand you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
\nas a witness before them and the pagans.
\nWhen they hand you over,
\ndo not worry about how you are to speak
\nor what you are to say.
\nYou will be given at that moment what you are to say.
\nFor it will not be you who speak
\nbut the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
\nBrother will hand over brother to death,
\nand the father his child;
\nchildren will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
\nYou will be hated by all because of my name,
\nbut whoever endures to the end will be saved.”<\/p>\n
