First Reading –\u00a01 John 2<\/span><\/h4>\n

Beloved:
\nThe way we may be sure that we know Jesus
\nis to keep his commandments.
\nWhoever says, “I know him,” but does not keep his commandments
\nis a liar, and the truth is not in him.
\nBut whoever keeps his word,
\nthe love of God is truly perfected in him.
\nThis is the way we may know that we are in union with him:
\nwhoever claims to abide in him ought to walk just as he walked.<\/p>\n

Beloved, I am writing no new commandment to you
\nbut an old commandment that you had from the beginning.
\nThe old commandment is the word that you have heard.
\nAnd yet I do write a new commandment to you,
\nwhich holds true in him and among you,
\nfor the darkness is passing away,
\nand the true light is already shining.
\nWhoever says he is in the light,
\nyet hates his brother, is still in the darkness.
\nWhoever loves his brother remains in the light,
\nand there is nothing in him to cause a fall.
\nWhoever hates his brother is in darkness;
\nhe walks in darkness
\nand does not know where he is going
\nbecause the darkness has blinded his eyes.<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Luke 2<\/span><\/h4>\n

When the days were completed for their purification
\naccording to the law of Moses,
\nthe parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem
\nto present him to the Lord,
\njust as it is written in the law of the Lord,
\nEvery male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,<\/em>
\nand to offer the sacrifice of
\na pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,<\/em>
\nin accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.<\/p>\n

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.
\nThis man was righteous and devout,
\nawaiting the consolation of Israel,
\nand the Holy Spirit was upon him.
\nIt had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit
\nthat he should not see death
\nbefore he had seen the Christ of the Lord.
\nHe came in the Spirit into the temple;
\nand when the parents brought in the child Jesus
\nto perform the custom of the law in regard to him,
\nhe took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:<\/p>\n

“Lord, now let your servant go in peace;
\nyour word has been fulfilled:
\nmy own eyes have seen the salvation
\nwhich you prepared in the sight of every people,
\na light to reveal you to the nations
\nand the glory of your people Israel.”<\/p>\n

The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
\nand Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,
\n“Behold, this child is destined
\nfor the fall and rise of many in Israel,
\nand to be a sign that will be contradicted
\n(and you yourself a sword will pierce)
\nso that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”<\/p>\n
