First Reading – Sm 1<\/span><\/h4>\n

Hannah rose after a meal at Shiloh,
\nand presented herself before the LORD;
\nat the time, Eli the priest was sitting on a chair
\nnear the doorpost of the LORD’s temple.
\nIn her bitterness she prayed to the LORD, weeping copiously,
\nand she made a vow, promising: “O LORD of hosts,
\nif you look with pity on the misery of your handmaid,
\nif you remember me and do not forget me,
\nif you give your handmaid a male child,
\nI will give him to the LORD for as long as he lives;
\nneither wine nor liquor shall he drink,
\nand no razor shall ever touch his head.”
\nAs she remained long at prayer before the LORD,
\nEli watched her mouth, for Hannah was praying silently;
\nthough her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard.
\nEli, thinking her drunk, said to her,
\n“How long will you make a drunken show of yourself?
\nSober up from your wine!”
\n“It isn’t that, my lord,” Hannah answered.
\n“I am an unhappy woman.
\nI have had neither wine nor liquor;
\nI was only pouring out my troubles to the LORD.
\nDo not think your handmaid a ne’er-do-well;
\nmy prayer has been prompted by my deep sorrow and misery.”
\nEli said, “Go in peace,
\nand may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”
\nShe replied, “Think kindly of your maidservant,” and left.
\nShe went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband,
\nand no longer appeared downcast.
\nEarly the next morning they worshiped before the LORD,
\nand then returned to their home in Ramah.<\/p>\n

When Elkanah had relations with his wife Hannah,
\nthe LORD remembered her.
\nShe conceived, and at the end of her term bore a son
\nwhom she called Samuel, since she had asked the LORD for him.<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Mark 1<\/span><\/h4>\n

Jesus came to Capernaum with his followers,
\nand on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
\nThe people were astonished at his teaching,
\nfor he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
\nIn their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;
\nhe cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
\nHave you come to destroy us?
\nI know who you are\u2013the Holy One of God!”
\nJesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!”
\nThe unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.
\nAll were amazed and asked one another,
\n“What is this?
\nA new teaching with authority.
\nHe commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”
\nHis fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.<\/p>\n
