First Reading –\u00a01 SM 3<\/span><\/h4>\n

During the time young Samuel was minister to the LORD under Eli,
\na revelation of the LORD was uncommon and vision infrequent.
\nOne day Eli was asleep in his usual place.
\nHis eyes had lately grown so weak that he could not see.
\nThe lamp of God was not yet extinguished,
\nand Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD
\nwhere the ark of God was.
\nThe LORD called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.”<\/p>\n

Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.”
\n“I did not call you,” Eli said. “Go back to sleep.”
\nSo he went back to sleep.
\nAgain the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli.
\n“Here I am,” he said. “You called me.”
\nBut Eli answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.”
\nAt that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD,
\nbecause the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet.
\nThe LORD called Samuel again, for the third time.
\nGetting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am.
\nYou called me.”
\nThen Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth.
\nSo Eli said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply,
\n‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'”
\nWhen Samuel went to sleep in his place,
\nthe LORD came and revealed his presence,
\ncalling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!”
\nSamuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”<\/p>\n

Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him,
\nnot permitting any word of his to be without effect.
\nThus all Israel from Dan to Beersheba
\ncame to know that Samuel was an accredited prophet of the LORD.<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Mark 1<\/span><\/h4>\n

On leaving the synagogue
\nJesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John.
\nSimon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever.
\nThey immediately told him about her.
\nHe approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.
\nThen the fever left her and she waited on them.<\/p>\n

When it was evening, after sunset,
\nthey brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.
\nThe whole town was gathered at the door.
\nHe cured many who were sick with various diseases,
\nand he drove out many demons,
\nnot permitting them to speak because they knew him.<\/p>\n

Rising very early before dawn,
\nhe left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.
\nSimon and those who were with him pursued him
\nand on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.”
\nHe told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages
\nthat I may preach there also.
\nFor this purpose have I come.”
\nSo he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons
\nthroughout the whole of Galilee.<\/p>\n
