First Reading –\u00a01 Sm 4<\/span><\/h4>\n

The Philistines gathered for an attack on Israel.
\nIsrael went out to engage them in battle and camped at Ebenezer,
\nwhile the Philistines camped at Aphek.
\nThe Philistines then drew up in battle formation against Israel.
\nAfter a fierce struggle Israel was defeated by the Philistines,
\nwho slew about four thousand men on the battlefield.
\nWhen the troops retired to the camp, the elders of Israel said,
\n“Why has the LORD permitted us to be defeated today
\nby the Philistines?
\nLet us fetch the ark of the LORD from Shiloh
\nthat it may go into battle among us
\nand save us from the grasp of our enemies.”<\/p>\n

So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there
\nthe ark of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned upon the cherubim.
\nThe two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were with the ark of God.
\nWhen the ark of the LORD arrived in the camp,
\nall Israel shouted so loudly that the earth resounded.
\nThe Philistines, hearing the noise of shouting, asked,
\n“What can this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?”
\nOn learning that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp,
\nthe Philistines were frightened.
\nThey said, “Gods have come to their camp.”
\nThey said also, “Woe to us! This has never happened before. Woe to us!
\nWho can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods?
\nThese are the gods that struck the Egyptians
\nwith various plagues and with pestilence.
\nTake courage and be manly, Philistines;
\notherwise you will become slaves to the Hebrews,
\nas they were your slaves.
\nSo fight manfully!”
\nThe Philistines fought and Israel was defeated;
\nevery man fled to his own tent.
\nIt was a disastrous defeat,
\nin which Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers.
\nThe ark of God was captured,
\nand Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were among the dead.<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Mark 1<\/span><\/h4>\n

A leper came to him and kneeling down begged him and said,
\n“If you wish, you can make me clean.”
\nMoved with pity, he stretched out his hand,
\ntouched the leper, and said to him,
\n“I do will it. Be made clean.”
\nThe leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.
\nThen, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once.
\nThen he said to him, “See that you tell no one anything,
\nbut go, show yourself to the priest
\nand offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed;
\nthat will be proof for them.”
\nThe man went away and began to publicize the whole matter.
\nHe spread the report abroad
\nso that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.
\nHe remained outside in deserted places,
\nand people kept coming to him from everywhere.<\/p>\n
