First Reading –\u00a01 Sm 8<\/span><\/h4>\n

All the elders of Israel came in a body to Samuel at Ramah
\nand said to him, “Now that you are old,
\nand your sons do not follow your example,
\nappoint a king over us, as other nations have, to judge us.”<\/p>\n

Samuel was displeased when they asked for a king to judge them.
\nHe prayed to the LORD, however, who said in answer:
\n“Grant the people’s every request.
\nIt is not you they reject, they are rejecting me as their king.”<\/p>\n

Samuel delivered the message of the LORD in full
\nto those who were asking him for a king.
\nHe told them:
\n“The rights of the king who will rule you will be as follows:
\nHe will take your sons and assign them to his chariots and horses,
\nand they will run before his chariot.
\nHe will also appoint from among them his commanders of groups
\nof a thousand and of a hundred soldiers.
\nHe will set them to do his plowing and his harvesting,
\nand to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots.
\nHe will use your daughters as ointment makers, as cooks, and as bakers.
\nHe will take the best of your fields, vineyards, and olive groves,
\nand give them to his officials.
\nHe will tithe your crops and your vineyards,
\nand give the revenue to his eunuchs and his slaves.
\nHe will take your male and female servants,
\nas well as your best oxen and your asses,
\nand use them to do his work.
\nHe will tithe your flocks and you yourselves will become his slaves.
\nWhen this takes place,
\nyou will complain against the king whom you have chosen,
\nbut on that day the LORD will not answer you.”<\/p>\n

The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel’s warning and said,
\n“Not so! There must be a king over us.
\nWe too must be like other nations,
\nwith a king to rule us and to lead us in warfare
\nand fight our battles.”
\nWhen Samuel had listened to all the people had to say,
\nhe repeated it to the LORD, who then said to him,
\n“Grant their request and appoint a king to rule them.”<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Mark 2<\/span><\/h4>\n

When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days,
\nit became known that he was at home.
\nMany gathered together so that there was no longer room for them,
\nnot even around the door,
\nand he preached the word to them.
\nThey came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.
\nUnable to get near Jesus because of the crowd,
\nthey opened up the roof above him.
\nAfter they had broken through,
\nthey let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying.
\nWhen Jesus saw their faith, he said to him,
\n“Child, your sins are forgiven.”
\nNow some of the scribes were sitting there asking themselves,
\n“Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming.
\nWho but God alone can forgive sins?”
\nJesus immediately knew in his mind what
\nthey were thinking to themselves,
\nso he said, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts?
\nWhich is easier, to say to the paralytic,
\n‘Your sins are forgiven,’
\nor to say, ‘Rise, pick up your mat and walk’?
\nBut that you may know
\nthat the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth”
\n\u2013he said to the paralytic,
\n“I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home.”
\nHe rose, picked up his mat at once,
\nand went away in the sight of everyone.
\nThey were all astounded
\nand glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”<\/p>\n
