First Reading –\u00a01 Sm 9<\/span><\/h4>\n

There was a stalwart man from Benjamin named Kish,
\nwho was the son of Abiel, son of Zeror,
\nson of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite.
\nHe had a son named Saul, who was a handsome young man.
\nThere was no other child of Israel more handsome than Saul;
\nhe stood head and shoulders above the people.<\/p>\n

Now the asses of Saul’s father, Kish, had wandered off.
\nKish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you
\nand go out and hunt for the asses.”
\nAccordingly they went through the hill country of Ephraim,
\nand through the land of Shalishah.
\nNot finding them there,
\nthey continued through the land of Shaalim without success.
\nThey also went through the land of Benjamin,
\nbut they failed to find the animals.<\/p>\n

When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the LORD assured him,
\n“This is the man of whom I told you; he is to govern my people.”<\/p>\n

Saul met Samuel in the gateway and said,
\n“Please tell me where the seer lives.”
\nSamuel answered Saul: “I am the seer.
\nGo up ahead of me to the high place and eat with me today.
\nIn the morning, before dismissing you,
\nI will tell you whatever you wish.”<\/p>\n

Then, from a flask he had with him, Samuel poured oil on Saul’s head;
\nhe also kissed him, saying:
\n“The LORD anoints you commander over his heritage.
\nYou are to govern the LORD’s people Israel,
\nand to save them from the grasp of their enemies roundabout.<\/p>\n

“This will be the sign for you
\nthat the LORD has anointed you commander over his heritage.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Mark 2<\/span><\/h4>\n

Jesus went out along the sea.
\nAll the crowd came to him and he taught them.
\nAs he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus,
\nsitting at the customs post.
\nJesus said to him, “Follow me.”
\nAnd he got up and followed Jesus.
\nWhile he was at table in his house,
\nmany tax collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and his disciples;
\nfor there were many who followed him.
\nSome scribes who were Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with sinners
\nand tax collectors and said to his disciples,
\n“Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
\nJesus heard this and said to them,
\n“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
\nI did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”<\/p>\n
