First Reading –\u00a01 Sm 15<\/span><\/h4>\n

Samuel said to Saul:
\n“Stop! Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night.”
\nSaul replied, “Speak!”
\nSamuel then said: “Though little in your own esteem,
\nare you not leader of the tribes of Israel?
\nThe LORD anointed you king of Israel and sent you on a mission, saying,
\n‘Go and put the sinful Amalekites under a ban of destruction.
\nFight against them until you have exterminated them.’
\nWhy then have you disobeyed the LORD?
\nYou have pounced on the spoil, thus displeasing the LORD.”
\nSaul answered Samuel: “I did indeed obey the LORD
\nand fulfill the mission on which the LORD sent me.
\nI have brought back Agag, and I have destroyed Amalek under the ban.
\nBut from the spoil the men took sheep and oxen,
\nthe best of what had been banned,
\nto sacrifice to the LORD their God in Gilgal.”
\nBut Samuel said:
\n“Does the LORD so delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
\nas in obedience to the command of the LORD?
\nObedience is better than sacrifice,
\nand submission than the fat of rams.
\nFor a sin like divination is rebellion,
\nand presumption is the crime of idolatry.
\nBecause you have rejected the command of the LORD,
\nhe, too, has rejected you as ruler.”<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Mark 2<\/span><\/h4>\n

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast.
\nPeople came to Jesus and objected,
\n“Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast,
\nbut your disciples do not fast?”
\nJesus answered them,
\n“Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
\nAs long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast.
\nBut the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
\nand then they will fast on that day.
\nNo one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak.
\nIf he does, its fullness pulls away,
\nthe new from the old, and the tear gets worse.
\nLikewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
\nOtherwise, the wine will burst the skins,
\nand both the wine and the skins are ruined.
\nRather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.”<\/p>\n
