First Reading –\u00a01 Sm 16<\/span><\/h4>\n

The LORD said to Samuel:
\n“How long will you grieve for Saul,
\nwhom I have rejected as king of Israel?
\nFill your horn with oil, and be on your way.
\nI am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem,
\nfor I have chosen my king from among his sons.”
\nBut Samuel replied:
\n“How can I go?
\nSaul will hear of it and kill me.”
\nTo this the LORD answered:
\n“Take a heifer along and say,
\n‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
\nInvite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I myself will tell you what to do;
\nyou are to anoint for me the one I point out to you.”<\/p>\n

Samuel did as the LORD had commanded him.
\nWhen he entered Bethlehem,
\nthe elders of the city came trembling to meet him and inquired,
\n“Is your visit peaceful, O seer?”
\nHe replied:
\n“Yes! I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.
\nSo cleanse yourselves and join me today for the banquet.”
\nHe also had Jesse and his sons cleanse themselves
\nand invited them to the sacrifice.
\nAs they came, he looked at Eliab and thought,
\n“Surely the LORD’s anointed is here before him.”
\nBut the LORD said to Samuel:
\n“Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature,
\nbecause I have rejected him.
\nNot as man sees does God see,
\nbecause he sees the appearance
\nbut the LORD looks into the heart.”
\nThen Jesse called Abinadab and presented him before Samuel,
\nwho said, “The LORD has not chosen him.”
\nNext Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said,
\n“The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
\nIn the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel,
\nbut Samuel said to Jesse,
\n“The LORD has not chosen any one of these.”
\nThen Samuel asked Jesse,
\n“Are these all the sons you have?”
\nJesse replied,
\n“There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep.”
\nSamuel said to Jesse,
\n“Send for him;
\nwe will not begin the sacrificial banquet until he arrives here.”
\nJesse sent and had the young man brought to them.
\nHe was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold
\nand making a splendid appearance.
\nThe LORD said,
\n“There\u2013anoint him, for this is he!”
\nThen Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand,
\nanointed him in the midst of his brothers;
\nand from that day on, the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David.
\nWhen Samuel took his leave, he went to Ramah.<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Mark 2<\/span><\/h4>\n

As Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath,
\nhis disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain.
\nAt this the Pharisees said to him,
\n“Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
\nHe said to them,
\n“Have you never read what David did
\nwhen he was in need and he and his companions were hungry?
\nHow he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest
\nand ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat,
\nand shared it with his companions?”
\nThen he said to them,
\n“The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.
\nThat is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”<\/p>\n
