First Reading –\u00a01 Sm 17<\/span><\/h4>\n

David spoke to Saul:
\n“Let your majesty not lose courage.
\nI am at your service to go and fight this Philistine.”
\nBut Saul answered David,
\n“You cannot go up against this Philistine and fight with him,
\nfor you are only a youth, while he has been a warrior from his youth.”<\/p>\n

David continued:
\n“The LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear,
\nwill also keep me safe from the clutches of this Philistine.”
\nSaul answered David, “Go! the LORD will be with you.”<\/p>\n

Then, staff in hand, David selected five smooth stones from the wadi
\nand put them in the pocket of his shepherd’s bag.
\nWith his sling also ready to hand, he approached the Philistine.<\/p>\n

With his shield bearer marching before him,
\nthe Philistine also advanced closer and closer to David.
\nWhen he had sized David up,
\nand seen that he was youthful, and ruddy, and handsome in appearance,
\nthe Philistine held David in contempt.
\nThe Philistine said to David,
\n“Am I a dog that you come against me with a staff?”
\nThen the Philistine cursed David by his gods
\nand said to him, “Come here to me,
\nand I will leave your flesh for the birds of the air
\nand the beasts of the field.”
\nDavid answered him:
\n“You come against me with sword and spear and scimitar,
\nbut I come against you in the name of the LORD of hosts,
\nthe God of the armies of Israel that you have insulted.
\nToday the LORD shall deliver you into my hand;
\nI will strike you down and cut off your head.
\nThis very day I will leave your corpse
\nand the corpses of the Philistine army for the birds of the air
\nand the beasts of the field;
\nthus the whole land shall learn that Israel has a God.
\nAll this multitude, too,
\nshall learn that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves.
\nFor the battle is the LORD’s and he shall deliver you into our hands.”<\/p>\n

The Philistine then moved to meet David at close quarters,
\nwhile David ran quickly toward the battle line
\nin the direction of the Philistine.
\nDavid put his hand into the bag and took out a stone,
\nhurled it with the sling,
\nand struck the Philistine on the forehead.
\nThe stone embedded itself in his brow,
\nand he fell prostrate on the ground.
\nThus David overcame the Philistine with sling and stone;
\nhe struck the Philistine mortally, and did it without a sword.
\nThen David ran and stood over him;
\nwith the Philistine’s own sword which he drew from its sheath
\nhe dispatched him and cut off his head.<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Mark 3<\/span><\/h4>\n

Jesus entered the synagogue.
\nThere was a man there who had a withered hand.
\nThey watched Jesus closely
\nto see if he would cure him on the sabbath
\nso that they might accuse him.
\nHe said to the man with the withered hand,
\n“Come up here before us.”
\nThen he said to the Pharisees,
\n“Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil,
\nto save life rather than to destroy it?”
\nBut they remained silent.
\nLooking around at them with anger
\nand grieved at their hardness of heart,
\nJesus said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.”
\nHe stretched it out and his hand was restored.
\nThe Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel
\nwith the Herodians against him to put him to death.<\/p>\n
