First Reading – 2 Sm<\/span><\/h4>\n

That night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said:
\n“Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD:
\nShould you build me a house to dwell in?
\nI have not dwelt in a house
\nfrom the day on which I led the children of Israel 319
\nout of Egypt to the present,
\nbut I have been going about in a tent under cloth.
\nIn all my wanderings everywhere among the children of Israel,
\ndid I ever utter a word to any one of the judges
\nwhom I charged to tend my people Israel, to ask:
\nWhy have you not built me a house of cedar?’<\/p>\n

“Now then, speak thus to my servant David,
\n‘The LORD of hosts has this to say:
\nIt was I who took you from the pasture
\nand from the care of the flock
\nto be commander of my people Israel.
\nI have been with you wherever you went,
\nand I have destroyed all your enemies before you.
\nAnd I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.
\nI will fix a place for my people Israel;
\nI will plant them so that they may dwell in their place
\nwithout further disturbance.
\nNeither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old,
\nsince the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel.
\nI will give you rest from all your enemies.
\nThe LORD also reveals to you that he will establish a house for you.
\nAnd when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors,
\nI will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins,
\nand I will make his Kingdom firm.
\nIt is he who shall build a house for my name.
\nAnd I will make his royal throne firm forever.
\nI will be a father to him,
\nand he shall be a son to me.
\nAnd if he does wrong,
\nI will correct him with the rod of men
\nand with human chastisements;
\nbut I will not withdraw my favor from him
\nas I withdrew it from your predecessor Saul,
\nwhom I removed from my presence.
\nYour house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me;
\nyour throne shall stand firm forever.'”<\/p>\n

Nathan reported all these words and this entire vision to David.<\/p>\n

Gospel –\u00a0Mark 4<\/span><\/h4>\n

On another occasion, Jesus began to teach by the sea.
\nA very large crowd gathered around him
\nso that he got into a boat on the sea and sat down.
\nAnd the whole crowd was beside the sea on land.
\nAnd he taught them at length in parables,
\nand in the course of his instruction he said to them,
\n“Hear this! A sower went out to sow.
\nAnd as he sowed, some seed fell on the path,
\nand the birds came and ate it up.
\nOther seed fell on rocky ground where it had little soil.
\nIt sprang up at once because the soil was not deep.
\nAnd when the sun rose, it was scorched and it withered for lack of roots.
\nSome seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it
\nand it produced no grain.
\nAnd some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit.
\nIt came up and grew and yielded thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.”
\nHe added, “Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear.”<\/p>\n

And when he was alone,
\nthose present along with the Twelve
\nquestioned him about the parables.
\nHe answered them,
\n“The mystery of the Kingdom of God has been granted to you.
\nBut to those outside everything comes in parables, so that
\nthey may look and see but not perceive,
\nand hear and listen but not understand,
\nin order that they may not be converted and be forgiven.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Jesus said to them, “Do you not understand this parable?
\nThen how will you understand any of the parables?
\nThe sower sows the word.
\nThese are the ones on the path where the word is sown.
\nAs soon as they hear, Satan comes at once
\nand takes away the word sown in them.
\nAnd these are the ones sown on rocky ground who,
\nwhen they hear the word, receive it at once with joy.
\nBut they have no roots; they last only for a time.
\nThen when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word,
\nthey quickly fall away.
\nThose sown among thorns are another sort.
\nThey are the people who hear the word,
\nbut worldly anxiety, the lure of riches,
\nand the craving for other things intrude and choke the word,
\nand it bears no fruit.
\nBut those sown on rich soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it
\nand bear fruit thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.”<\/p>\n
