First Reading – 2 Sm 15<\/span><\/h4>\n

An informant came to David with the report,
\n“The children of Israel have transferred their loyalty to Absalom.”
\nAt this, David said to all his servants
\nwho were with him in Jerusalem:
\n“Up! Let us take flight, or none of us will escape from Absalom.
\nLeave quickly, lest he hurry and overtake us,
\nthen visit disaster upon us and put the city to the sword.”<\/p>\n

As David went up the Mount of Olives, he wept without ceasing.
\nHis head was covered, and he was walking barefoot.
\nAll those who were with him also had their heads covered
\nand were weeping as they went.<\/p>\n

As David was approaching Bahurim,
\na man named Shimei, the son of Gera
\nof the same clan as Saul’s family,
\nwas coming out of the place, cursing as he came.
\nHe threw stones at David and at all the king’s officers,
\neven though all the soldiers, including the royal guard,
\nwere on David’s right and on his left.
\nShimei was saying as he cursed:
\n“Away, away, you murderous and wicked man!
\nThe LORD has requited you for all the bloodshed in the family of Saul,
\nin whose stead you became king,
\nand the LORD has given over the kingdom to your son Absalom.
\nAnd now you suffer ruin because you are a murderer.”
\nAbishai, son of Zeruiah, said to the king:
\n“Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king?
\nLet me go over, please, and lop off his head.”
\nBut the king replied: “What business is it of mine or of yours,
\nsons of Zeruiah, that he curses?
\nSuppose the LORD has told him to curse David;
\nwho then will dare to say, ‘Why are you doing this?'”
\nThen the king said to Abishai and to all his servants:
\n“If my own son, who came forth from my loins, is seeking my life,
\nhow much more might this Benjaminite do so?
\nLet him alone and let him curse, for the LORD has told him to.
\nPerhaps the LORD will look upon my affliction
\nand make it up to me with benefits
\nfor the curses he is uttering this day.”
\nDavid and his men continued on the road,
\nwhile Shimei kept abreast of them on the hillside,
\nall the while cursing and throwing stones and dirt as he went.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Gospel –\u00a0Mark 5<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus and his disciples came to the other side of the sea,
\nto the territory of the Gerasenes.
\nWhen he got out of the boat,
\nat once a man from the tombs who had an unclean spirit met him.
\nThe man had been dwelling among the tombs,
\nand no one could restrain him any longer, even with a chain.
\nIn fact, he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains,
\nbut the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shackles smashed,
\nand no one was strong enough to subdue him.
\nNight and day among the tombs and on the hillsides
\nhe was always crying out and bruising himself with stones.
\nCatching sight of Jesus from a distance,
\nhe ran up and prostrated himself before him,
\ncrying out in a loud voice,
\n“What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?
\nI adjure you by God, do not torment me!”
\n(He had been saying to him, “Unclean spirit, come out of the man!”)
\nHe asked him, “What is your name?”
\nHe replied, “Legion is my name. There are many of us.”
\nAnd he pleaded earnestly with him
\nnot to drive them away from that territory.<\/p>\n

Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside.
\nAnd they pleaded with him,
\n“Send us into the swine. Let us enter them.”
\nAnd he let them, and the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine.
\nThe herd of about two thousand rushed down a steep bank into the sea,
\nwhere they were drowned.
\nThe swineherds ran away and reported the incident in the town
\nand throughout the countryside.
\nAnd people came out to see what had happened.
\nAs they approached Jesus,
\nthey caught sight of the man who had been possessed by Legion,
\nsitting there clothed and in his right mind.
\nAnd they were seized with fear.
\nThose who witnessed the incident explained to them what had happened
\nto the possessed man and to the swine.
\nThen they began to beg him to leave their district.
\nAs he was getting into the boat,
\nthe man who had been possessed pleaded to remain with him.
\nBut Jesus would not permit him but told him instead,
\n“Go home to your family and announce to them
\nall that the Lord in his pity has done for you.”
\nThen the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis
\nwhat Jesus had done for him; and all were amazed.<\/p>\n
