First Reading – 2 Sm 24<\/span><\/h4>\n

King David said to Joab and the leaders of the army who were with him,
\n“Tour all the tribes in Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba
\nand register the people, that I may know their number.”
\nJoab then reported to the king the number of people registered:
\nin Israel, eight hundred thousand men fit for military service;
\nin Judah, five hundred thousand.<\/p>\n

Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people,
\nand said to the LORD:
\n“I have sinned grievously in what I have done.
\nBut now, LORD, forgive the guilt of your servant,
\nfor I have been very foolish.”
\nWhen David rose in the morning,
\nthe LORD had spoken to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying:
\n“Go and say to David, ‘This is what the LORD says:
\nI offer you three alternatives;
\nchoose one of them, and I will inflict it on you.'”
\nGad then went to David to inform him.
\nHe asked: “Do you want a three years’ famine to come upon your land,
\nor to flee from your enemy three months while he pursues you,
\nor to have a three days’ pestilence in your land?
\nNow consider and decide what I must reply to him who sent me.”
\nDavid answered Gad: “I am in very serious difficulty.
\nLet us fall by the hand of God, for he is most merciful;
\nbut let me not fall by the hand of man.”
\nThus David chose the pestilence.
\nNow it was the time of the wheat harvest
\nwhen the plague broke out among the people.
\nThe LORD then sent a pestilence over Israel
\nfrom morning until the time appointed,
\nand seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba died.
\nBut when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it,
\nthe LORD regretted the calamity
\nand said to the angel causing the destruction among the people,
\n“Enough now! Stay your hand.”
\nThe angel of the LORD was then standing
\nat the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
\nWhen David saw the angel who was striking the people,
\nhe said to the LORD: “It is I who have sinned;
\nit is I, the shepherd, who have done wrong.
\nBut these are sheep; what have they done?
\nPunish me and my kindred.”<\/p>\n

<\/span>Gospel –\u00a0Mark 6<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus departed from there and came to his native place,
\naccompanied by his disciples.
\nWhen the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue,
\nand many who heard him were astonished.
\nThey said, \u201cWhere did this man get all this?
\nWhat kind of wisdom has been given him?
\nWhat mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!
\nIs he not the carpenter, the son of Mary,
\nand the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon?
\nAnd are not his sisters here with us?\u201d
\nAnd they took offense at him.
\nJesus said to them,
\n\u201cA prophet is not without honor except in his native place
\nand among his own kin and in his own house.\u201d
\nSo he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,
\napart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.
\nHe was amazed at their lack of faith.<\/p>\n
