First Reading –\u00a01 Kings 3<\/span><\/h4>\n

Solomon went to Gibeon to sacrifice there,
\nbecause that was the most renowned high place.
\nUpon its altar Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings.
\nIn Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night.
\nGod said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.”
\nSolomon answered:
\n“You have shown great favor to your servant, my father David,
\nbecause he behaved faithfully toward you,
\nwith justice and an upright heart;
\nand you have continued this great favor toward him, even today,
\nseating a son of his on his throne.
\nO LORD, my God, you have made me, your servant,
\nking to succeed my father David;
\nbut I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act.
\nI serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen,
\na people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted.
\nGive your servant, therefore, an understanding heart
\nto judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong.
\nFor who is able to govern this vast people of yours?”<\/p>\n

The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request.
\nSo God said to him: “Because you have asked for this\u2013
\nnot for a long life for yourself,
\nnor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies,
\nbut for understanding so that you may know what is right\u2013
\nI do as you requested.
\nI give you a heart so wise and understanding
\nthat there has never been anyone like you up to now,
\nand after you there will come no one to equal you.
\nIn addition, I give you what you have not asked for,
\nsuch riches and glory that among kings there is not your like.”<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Gospel – Mark 6<\/span><\/p>\n

The Apostles gathered together with Jesus
\nand reported all they had done and taught.
\nHe said to them,
\n\u201cCome away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.\u201d
\nPeople were coming and going in great numbers,
\nand they had no opportunity even to eat.
\nSo they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.
\nPeople saw them leaving and many came to know about it.
\nThey hastened there on foot from all the towns
\nand arrived at the place before them.<\/p>\n

When Jesus disembarked and saw the vast crowd,
\nhis heart was moved with pity for them,
\nfor they were like sheep without a shepherd;
\nand he began to teach them many things.<\/p>\n
