First Reading –\u00a01 Kings<\/span><\/h4>\n

When Solomon was old his wives had turned his heart to strange gods,
\nand his heart was not entirely with the LORD, his God,
\nas the heart of his father David had been.
\nBy adoring Astarte, the goddess of the Sidonians,
\nand Milcom, the idol of the Ammonites,
\nSolomon did evil in the sight of the LORD;
\nhe did not follow him unreservedly as his father David had done.
\nSolomon then built a high place to Chemosh, the idol of Moab,
\nand to Molech, the idol of the Ammonites,
\non the hill opposite Jerusalem.
\nHe did the same for all his foreign wives
\nwho burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.
\nThe LORD, therefore, became angry with Solomon,
\nbecause his heart was turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel,
\nwho had appeared to him twice
\n(for though the LORD had forbidden him
\nthis very act of following strange gods,
\nSolomon had not obeyed him).<\/p>\n

So the LORD said to Solomon: “Since this is what you want,
\nand you have not kept my covenant and my statutes
\nwhich I enjoined on you,
\nI will deprive you of the kingdom and give it to your servant.
\nI will not do this during your lifetime, however,
\nfor the sake of your father David;
\nit is your son whom I will deprive.
\nNor will I take away the whole kingdom.
\nI will leave your son one tribe for the sake of my servant David
\nand of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”<\/p>\n

Gospel – Mark 7<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Jesus went to the district of Tyre.
\nHe entered a house and wanted no one to know about it,
\nbut he could not escape notice.
\nSoon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him.
\nShe came and fell at his feet.
\nThe woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth,
\nand she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
\nHe said to her, \u201cLet the children be fed first.
\nFor it is not right to take the food of the children
\nand throw it to the dogs.\u201d
\nShe replied and said to him,
\n\u201cLord, even the dogs under the table eat the children\u2019s scraps.\u201d
\nThen he said to her, \u201cFor saying this, you may go.
\nThe demon has gone out of your daughter.\u201d
\nWhen the woman went home, she found the child lying in bed
\nand the demon gone.<\/p>\n
