First Reading –\u00a02 Kgs 5<\/span><\/h4>\n

Naaman, the army commander of the king of Aram,
\nwas highly esteemed and respected by his master,
\nfor through him the LORD had brought victory to Aram.
\nBut valiant as he was, the man was a leper.
\nNow the Arameans had captured in a raid on the land of Israel
\na little girl, who became the servant of Naaman’s wife.
\n“If only my master would present himself to the prophet in Samaria,”
\nshe said to her mistress, “he would cure him of his leprosy.”
\nNaaman went and told his lord
\njust what the slave girl from the land of Israel had said.
\n“Go,” said the king of Aram.
\n“I will send along a letter to the king of Israel.”
\nSo Naaman set out, taking along ten silver talents,
\nsix thousand gold pieces, and ten festal garments.
\nTo the king of Israel he brought the letter, which read:
\n“With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you,
\nthat you may cure him of his leprosy.”<\/p>\n

When he read the letter,
\nthe king of Israel tore his garments and exclaimed:
\n“Am I a god with power over life and death,
\nthat this man should send someone to me to be cured of leprosy?
\nTake note! You can see he is only looking for a quarrel with me!”
\nWhen Elisha, the man of God,
\nheard that the king of Israel had torn his garments,
\nhe sent word to the king:
\n“Why have you torn your garments?
\nLet him come to me and find out
\nthat there is a prophet in Israel.”<\/p>\n

Naaman came with his horses and chariots
\nand stopped at the door of Elisha’s house.
\nThe prophet sent him the message:
\n“Go and wash seven times in the Jordan,
\nand your flesh will heal, and you will be clean.”
\nBut Naaman went away angry, saying,
\n“I thought that he would surely come out and stand there
\nto invoke the LORD his God,
\nand would move his hand over the spot,
\nand thus cure the leprosy.
\nAre not the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar,
\nbetter than all the waters of Israel?
\nCould I not wash in them and be cleansed?”
\nWith this, he turned about in anger and left.<\/p>\n

But his servants came up and reasoned with him.
\n“My father,” they said,
\n“if the prophet had told you to do something extraordinary,
\nwould you not have done it?
\nAll the more now, since he said to you,
\n‘Wash and be clean,’ should you do as he said.”
\nSo Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times
\nat the word of the man of God.
\nHis flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.<\/p>\n

He returned with his whole retinue to the man of God.
\nOn his arrival he stood before him and said,
\n“Now I know that there is no God in all the earth,
\nexcept in Israel.”<\/p>\n

Gospel -Luke 4<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Jesus said to the people in the synagogue at Nazareth:
\n\u201cAmen, I say to you,
\nno prophet is accepted in his own native place.
\nIndeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel
\nin the days of Elijah
\nwhen the sky was closed for three and a half years
\nand a severe famine spread over the entire land.
\nIt was to none of these that Elijah was sent,
\nbut only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
\nAgain, there were many lepers in Israel
\nduring the time of Elisha the prophet;
\nyet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.\u201d
\nWhen the people in the synagogue heard this,
\nthey were all filled with fury.
\nThey rose up, drove him out of the town,
\nand led him to the brow of the hill
\non which their town had been built,
\nto hurl him down headlong.
\nBut he passed through the midst of them and went away.<\/p>\n
