Charles took on the leadership of the Christian community in Uganda after the  The Society of Missionaries of Africa were expelled. He protected the boys of the court from King Mwanga who was a violent ruler and pedophile.

He along with several companions had to walk a 37 mile trek after which they were burnt to death for their Christian Faith.
